BSD licensed C, C++ and Fortran compiler released.

PathScale announced today that the EKOPath 4 Compiler Suite is now available as an open source project and free download for Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris. This release includes documentation and the complete development stack, including compiler, debugger, assembler, runtimes and standard libraries. EKOPath is the product of years of ongoing development, representing one of the industries highest performance Intel 64 and AMD C, C++ and Fortran compilers.

They also just released a BSD licensed C++ runtime.

The news is rather interesting. It is obvious that the compiler in question is ill suited as a system compiler (being AMD, Intel 64, MIPS specific). However it looks interesting from the supercomputing point of view. It will be interesting trying to run on FreeBSD. After 3-4 years it will be probably the first time I actually install FreeBSD unless they port it in the meantime to NetBSD.

They indeed released one very important c++ library under BSD terms which could help get a rid of GNU tool chain. See the section about FreeBSD and NetBSD foundation endorsement. Even if the compiler is not BSD licensed it is still free and highly optimized for multi-parallel supercomputing so it could be used to improve the state of supercomputing on NetBSD and FreeBSD.

@TerryP, I believe it was actually released under the GPL license.. most of the articles covering the release emphasized the prior release of the C++ standard library and I failed to do enough fact checking.

Still, I'm sure it'll make Oko happy that a "high performance" C/C++ compiler is available for FreeBSD and has the potential of being ported to the others.
