this is not an advertisement! I just found it in my mailbox.

!!!The FreeBSD Project launched a official support forum !!!

Announcement from Brad Davis.

Dear FreeBSD users,

The FreeBSD project is finally, after much work, pleased to announce the
availability of an official FreeBSD web based discussion forum. It is
our hope that this forum will serve as a public support channel for
FreeBSD users around the world and as a complement to our fine mailing
lists.

You can register and start using our new service here:

http://forums.FreeBSD.org

The structure of the forum is still in a late beta stage, so if you have
ideas, suggestions for improvements or bug reports, send them to:
forum-moderators at FreeBSD dot org.

Please also have a look at our rules before you create your first thread
or post your first message. You can find our official list of forum
rules here:

Also, FreeBSD developers (people with commit access to our CVS/SVN trees)
can be distinguished by having an '@' character at the end of their
username.

It is our hope that both users and developers will find this new service

Yes, that is why I recommended CarpetSmoker to use Vbulletin for these forums.

Developers will still use MLs but IMHO forums are much more comfortable to use then MLs.

To bad there isn't a gateway to link it with the mailing lists.

The comp.lang.ruby newsgroup, ruby-talk mailing list, and a comparable forum, all are chained together IIRC, and quite nice. Post to one, rest should get it eventually unless there's an issue.

Quite amazing. The Official FreeBSD Forum already has more members than this Forum. This is still going to be my main hangout, though. I like seeing a broad variety of discussion and I like the members around here. I did join over there, however, and I saw a few others from here who did too.

Overall I think it will be a good alternative to mailing lists for the masses. It also could help get more people interested or keep them interested in FreeBSD.

Yes, I realize that. I am just wondering where all of these people (now twice the user base of this forum) came from in only a couple days. If people were looking for a forum all along, why weren't they coming here between the time bsdforums went down hill and the official FreeBSD Forums went up? I only mention bsdforums because it was one of the reasons cited for putting up the FreeBSD Forums almost like this one didn't exist.

I have nothing against the FreeBSD Forums, though. I look at them just like I look at the FreeBSD mailing lists. Just another place to find FreeBSD-specific information. As I said previously, I do enjoy this forum for its wider variety of topics. I also can't imagine the FreeBSD Forums being as fun or relaxed as this one is.

I blame it on the colour theme. I have said this before and I will say it again, its too drab.

Ofcourse, the colour theme can't be the only reason. unix.com appears to be quite popular inspite of having the same theme.

I much prefer the theme here; it is easier on my eyes than one at FreeBSD Forums.

Ok then perhaps we all agree that the bsdforums.org theme was good.
Why not use that? We needn't worry about the purported copright concerns now that the site is down.

Actually there are many other forums discussing FreeBSD.
The only thing that got me here, was, i gave another shoot at bsdforums.com

for some reason my old acc was locked and i had to create new on... (i wanted to get some info, and it was the only way...., cause i never got any reply form admins)
and then someone replied, that bsdforums are down, and i should move here.

No wonder forums.freebsd.org got so many ppl, as FreeBSD.org is 1st place where you search for help, get news etc

What if I run for political office some day and my opponent digs up the fact that I was signed up for the official FreeBSD forums, and that BSD's permissive license smacks of libertarianism, and thus I'm anti-government and therefore an anarchist?!?!
