Well i don't know the model of the 500w either. It is the only stuff the distrubuters have over here..
But i can't see how it can still be a problem.... Looks like i havent had any issues with the one drive since the replacement (ad6). However ad2 still permanantly has issues while copying to it... The issue with ad6 caused hangs and eventually a reboot on server. What is the explanation of the errors i was receiving on ad6 and the ones im getting on ad2? And is it safe to simply ignore these errors? |

3 new IDE cables tested.
No Issues with motherboard, works fine within windows Problem only seems to be with some harddrives and FreeBSD. (Although once again harddrives works perfectly within windows). If i replace the ad2 with an old 20gb seagate no probs, same motherboard/cable/PSU. Just keep in mind the problem with ad6 still has not come back since PSU replacement, so could be differance issues im experiancing.. |
|
|||
No errors in logs and does a min of 66MB constant transfer.
ad2 is basically a new drive 3months old max. |
|
|||
A quick note doing atacontrol mode ad2 UDMA100 or lower does seem to produce far less errors.
Is my data at risk? |
|

Ok and today, it simply rebooted itself for no reason.
(Is there any way to find out why it rebooted?) Does FreeBSD have issues with having a fileserver as a role? Ive tried third power supply now.... |

And another crash today, i hapen to have a terminal open tailing the messages log.

As for Version and Kernel, im running FreeBSD 7.0 production release. Custom kernel at this point, however problems weir there with stock kernel as well. |

If possible can you upgrade to -STABLE and see if the problems repeat themselves? I get the feeling the version of FreeBSD you have just doesn't work well with your hardware configuration, if using -STABLE makes no difference I can only suggest you subscribe to one of the FreeBSD mailing lists and post your problem there.

Stable
How would i go about upgrading it to stable?
Thank You For The Assiatance! |
|
|||
If you want to install from scratch the latest STABLE iso can be found at ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/snapshots/200806/
If you want to actually upgrade you will need to modify your csup file to include the tag RELENG_7 which will download the -STABLE source, then you can do a kernel and world rebuild (be sure to run mergemaster as well) which should upgrade you current system to -STABLE. If you not sure about any of this and its not a production system, I'd recommend just downloading the iso from the above link and install from scratch. |

Ok, so the issues i had before replacing hard-drive has also come back....

Speed
With me it seems to directly relate to speed.
ie if the 750gb drive starts reaching speeds of 40-50MB over network i know it's bound to be soon before a crash. The 250Gb Maxtor Drive seems to have very little issues being red off, but produces issues when being written too. Ive managed to reduce that even further by setting speed to UDMA100 instead of UDMA133 I will try what u mentioned next time it crashes, at the rate its going we going to loose our DB because of this. As for upgrading to STABLE , i wonder if it will fix issue as we have had this with 6.2 release aswell. Thanks for all the help abroad though! |

Try checking the drive with the manufacturer diagnostics. Western Digital I know have DOS bootable CD images of their tools available for i386.

Yes that's good advice and I'd recommend it too; often one of the first things I do when I've purchased a new hard drive is visit the manufacturer's website to see if there is a bootable diagnostics CD I can download.
