The location of Backup files from portupgrade

Hi all:
Every time when I portupgrade I see a message "Backing up the old version", and I think it waste my much of space and so I want to delete it and what is the PATH ?

Haven't really looked into it, but I think that that backup is removed immediately when the portupgrade itself succeeds. It is just a backup for backing out of a failed portupgrade (reverting to the previously installed version).

DutchDaemon is correct. Portupgrade creates a temporary backup package in case the newer version of the port fails to install.

By the way, running portsclean -CDD from time to time will get rid of previously downloaded (but now upgraded) tarballs of your installed ports.

Doesn't anyone read man pages:

     PACKAGES	       Base directory where portupgrade creates packages.
		       Default is ``$PORTSDIR/packages''.

And:

-b
     --backup-packages	    Keep backup packages of the old versions.  These
			    are kept in a temporary directory.	See PKG_TMPDIR
			    and TMPDIR in the ENVIRONMENT section.

So, by default, the temp packages are stored under /tmp. If PACKAGES is set in the environment (via shell rc files, for instance), and you use -b, then the packages are left behind in the directory you specify.
