I have FreeBSD on a sparc machine (sparc64) and would like to do some java development, but am finding it hard trying to install the java development kit. Is it possible?

have you tried compiling it from ports?

Code:
satan# make ===> jdk-1.6.0.3p3 is only for i386 amd64, while you are running sparc64.*** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/java/jdk16. satan#

If you want to do Java development, don't use FreeBSD.

Why exactly?

I hate to say it, but Java is a Sun technology. So is sparc hardware. And so is Solaris. Use Solaris + Sparc = Great Java development platform.
There, I said it.
