Default Usb serial adapter
Hi,
I own a router, to configure it you need to connect to it through the serial port.
My laptop lacks a serial port and therefore i am forced to use a usb->serial adapter. The problem is that minicom hangs at 'Initilizing modem' and there is no getting out of it, a hard reset is the only way. Freebsd recognizes the serial adapter.

Any ideas?

Have you tried tip? tip uses the /etc/remote file. You just copy an entry give it a new name and change the value of the dv to the device name of your usb->serial adapter.

Can you give a hint what model/chipset your adapter is/uses? I also need to get one of these but I don't have a clue what is supported by freebsd, neither how to find out which adapter is using what kind of chipset.

Fortunately most USB serial adaptors are CDC(Communications Device Class) compliant..

In minicom's config, remove the initialization string. As this isn't a modem, it doesn't need to be "initialized."

I too connect to my router/firewall through minicom/serial, however I have a system that's old enough and has a serial port, so no USB->serial for me.

Just the initialization string or all the dialing strings as well?

Tip also gets stuck with the messege 'connected'

It is probably just a shitty adapter, it wont work on my other FreeBSD machine either. But if i remove the usb->serial adapter and connect it directly to the serial port it will....

Is it supported by the uplcom driver?
Edit: my adapter freezed the system without loading uplcom.ko but your adapter is already recognized so I don't think it's the same problem...

From my experience, the prolific PL-2303 chipset worked perfectly on this kind of adapters.
Maybe you can try buying something based on it.
