howto stop XDM and start KDE ?

Both KDE and Gnome "4.4.3" versions had a bug. Download the "4.4.4" image which was made availiable late Saturday.

The bug was in the /etc/rc.local script.

For KDE and Gnome, the image would have too many files in it to boot, if it were all a single CD9660 filesystem in the ISO image. So on these images, /usr/local is kept in a separate ISO within the ISO, which gets mounted during /etc/rc.local execution. I'd made a global change to rc.local in 4.4.3, and that accidentaly eliminated the mount.

I've downloaded 4.4.4 (kde.i386.4.4.4.iso) but still starting XDM instead of KDE.

All you need to do is log on as user or root.

XDM is the login manager for all ISOs. If you don't want to use XDM, boot in console mode and use startx instead, after logging in as user or root.

Let's read this excerpt from the FAQ together (highlight mine):

Why did you make these ISOs available to the public?

It might also serve as a “rescue disc” as it contains more functionality than the ramdisk kernel used for installation and upgrade. The ramdisk kernel is included on the disc for installation of the standard OS, not the LiveCD/LiveDVD image.

To be clear, these make testing of the OS easier. You cannot install these OS images onto hard drive, and they are not intended to advocate OpenBSD as the “OS for the masses.”

These discs include the ramdisk kernel for installation of OpenBSD from other media or the network. To boot it, just type bsd.rd at the “boot>” prompt. Installation is described in FAQ 4.
