SATA controller

Hi my friends!

My disk space is almost full and i intend to buy SATA controller (PCI slot). Which one has good support and works nice with Freebsd 6 ?

I use the 3ware SATA cards and they seem to have good support.

Check the hardware compatibility list for the version of FreeBSD you are using on the FreeBSD.org website.

3ware is nice but too expensive for my request. I'm looking for VIA controller with VT6421A chipset.

The currently supported ATA/SATA controller chips are:


VIA: VT6410, VT6420, VT6421, VT82C586, VT82C586B, VT82C596,
VT82C596B, VT82C686, VT82C686A, VT82C686B, VT8231,
VT8233, VT8233A, VT8233C, VT8235, VT8237, VT8237A,
VT8251.

I have a cheap Syba SA3114 SATA card in my personal file server.

It uses the Silicon Image 3114 chipset. It isn't anything spectacular, but it works.

Good, have you added same line to kernel to start working controller ?

Nope, it is just using ata(4)

Had lots of problems with SI 3114 chipset. A bunch of DMA problems and not to talk about performance.

I bought a no-name PCI card with the SiIicon Image SiI 3512 chipset. It works great and was only 20€.

Don't buy anything with the Initio1662 chipset as it is not supported by FreeBSD.

I own a cheap Promise Sata 300 TX4. Works without problem.

I use USB2.0 cabinets for my external SATA. Just have to remember to unmount them before de-connecting.
I personally found eSATA less handy.
