macppc firefox + gtk problems

hello folks,
since my notebook broke I'm running openbsd on a macmini I have, but there are quite a few issues.
First of all, firefox from the packages crashes very often. Should I try to install it from the ports?
I also have a lot of problems with gtk: I have firefox, pidgin, mlterm installed, which all use gtk, but the menues (and the pidgin chat) display the black fonts only after a "wipe" them with the mouse cursor. Any idea?

I have some other problems, but for now it would be great to solve these.

Building from ports will not help you -- there will be no difference in the packages produced by compiling ports from the packages you've already installed.

If your crashes are not due to your OS configuration (RAM size, swap space size), then your problem is most likely Firefox software.

Firefox crashes. A lot. It's very magnanimous about it; it crashes on every architecture it runs on.

If you want to keep using Firefox, you must get used to this. If you have some debugging skills, you could try to help Mozilla by turning on debugging options, analyzing failures, and submitting patches that fix the bugs ... and hope they take your submissions. For that, you'll want the port, to have access to Firefox source code.

As to your font problems, they might be video configuration related rather than caused by gtk software.

in fact firefox never crashed on me neither on windows nor on openbsd i386
It's no big deal though, since I will mostly use lynx or links which is faster

Maybe so, but he is right :-P

The more addins and plugins in use, the more often it occurs. Although it likely won't help with plugins, you should try firefox in -safe-mode as well.

I solved my problem with the display, thank you jggimi, I simply changed my DefaultDepth from 16 to 24. When I configured X, I checked my monitor's specs and it says the maximum depth is 16 millions so, I thought it would have been better to set it to 16. I guess I don't know exactly what I'm doing. But it works fine now.


Now I would like to ask another question but I guess it's better to open a new thread since it's about installing mlterm from source.

I'm using FF right now, Carpetsmoker. FF3.0.1. It crashes often. I live with it.

Depth is "bits" of color description per pixel. 8 bits (1 byte) = 256 colors, 16 bits (2 bytes) = 65536 colors, etc...
