The beta release of version 9.2 of the open source PostgreSQL database has been announced by the PostgreSQL Global Development Group, promising major improvements in performance that enable better horizontal and vertical scalability. One new optimisation – index-only scanning – allows searches to avoid reading the underlying tables and instead search only the indexes; index only scanning happens automatically but there are a number of caveats to its effectiveness. It is claimed though that it will, for most use cases and data warehousing, provide "an order-of-magnitude performance improvement".

As a relative newcomer to Openbsd, I decided to write a review of the 5.1 release for Distrowatch.com from a desktop user's perspective. Openbsd has come a long way in terms of improved hardware support and ease of setup and my experience has been very positive.
The review is at Distrowatch.com in their news section. I would post the url but the forum software does not allow new members to post urls. Perhaps one of you would be kind enough to post it in a reply in this thread.

I have a Thinkpad X41 tablet, currently running Linux because xf86-input-wacom doesn’t (currently) run on OpenBSD. What are some useful programs for working with tablet input and/or handwriting recognition?

For taking notes in class or writing on PDFs, Xournal works pretty well. You can write on top of any PDF, and export the result as PDF, making it useful for signing forms (instead of the typical “download, print, fill out, scan, email” cycle). It doesn’t do any handwriting recognition, though.

Another program I’ve found useful for identifying Japanese characters is KanjiPad (OpenBSD/FreeBSD japanese/kanjipad, pkgsrc misc/kanjipad).

I’ve found some web apps that do handwriting recognition as well. I’d like to find native apps that replace them, to avoid being reliant on external servers, internet connection, and a bloated web browser.

shapecatcher: finds a Unicode character.

Ajax Hwr: finds a Japanese character. Like KanjiPad but recognizes kana too.

Web Write: converts written sentences to plain text.

Web Equation: converts handwriting to LaTeX or MathML.

Detexify: like Web Equation but only does single LaTeX characters. Source code available.

For TeX typesetting, just plain TeX is enough for my purposes. I don't use LaTeX, nor do I want to download a full teTeX installation. I find the following set of packages is sufficient:

Code:

tex-texlive.infra
tiff
web2c
xdvik
xz

This provides plain TeX, xdvi, mf, dvips and ps2pdf. This set of packages is "complete" in that it has no other package dependencies. As the pkgsrc collection is continually being changed, the necessary packages may not be the same by the time you read this.

The total size of the .tgz files for these packages is about 55 MB, which is "lightweight" compared to teTeX which weighs in at 237 MB.

For context, the above works on NetBSD 5.1.2 release i386, and I suspect it should work for any NetBSD 5.*. I have not tried 6 beta. The packages are available from:

http://nyftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/p.../i386/5.0/All/

Hi everybody!

As a general rule, we must use the right AC adapter for the right machine .. Sometimes, though, we are obliged to break the rule because we miss the thing in nearby stores ..
When would such a replacement be harmless ? when would it cause overheat ? or fire even ?
(for instance : replacing Titanium AC Adapter with ibook's or the other way round .. replacing dell's with compaq's .. voltage is the often same but slight differences exist in Watt outputs )
