In March of this year, Sylvestre Gallon (syl@) posted to tech@ his work-in-progress on a Fuse ("filesystem in userland") implementation for OpenBSD. Since then, implementation work has continued among developers and on Friday, what I understand to be the first Fuse-based application was implemented: Tuxera's ntfs-3g driver has been made functional for OpenBSD as new port sysutils/ntfs-3g. Developers were testing on amd64 and in my own testing today I and am pleased to report that it functions well for me on i386.

This means that OpenBD now has the capability to write to NTFS filesystems, and to use the ntfs-3g toolset to completely manage NTFS partitions through the ntfs-3g ntfsprogs(8) tool suite.

All of this is new, and welcome to those of us (like me) who have been using other OSes in order to use Tuxera's ntfs-3g software.

This functionality is in active development, therefore status is subject to continuous change. When I was testing a few short hours ago, fuse(4) required a custom kernel, the userland library fuselib needed to be manually installed, two fuselib header files needed to be manually added to /usr/include, and /dev/fuse* devices needed to be created. All of this may change in the next hours, days, or weeks as work continues.

I have several computers all running OpenBSD. After the recent Toronto Hackathon, current is running extremely well with a long standing xombrero issue resolved.

Also perusing the recent Xenocara code base, many of the Xorg vulnerabilites (I previously posted in News) have been addressed in current.

The number and extent of the recent xorg vulnerabilities was large enough to wonder if and how the vulnerabilities would be addressed in 5.3 release (one huge patch and whole xenocara build, multiple small patches with selective xenocara builds, new x install sets or do nothing at all). I have seen some comments acknowledging the issue in openbsd-misc but no discussion on how it will be addressed. There were no comments in the hackathon or in openbsd-x11

My systems function mostly as desktops so Xorg vulnerabilities carry some weight.

Anyone have insight as to if the vulnerabilities in 5.3 will be addressed? I think it counts as the base install.

I am trying to get a wireless router running, it was already configured as a NAT with two interfaces one for the Internet and for the LAN. I added an atheros based wireless adapter, and tried setting it up. I tried using a bridge of a virtual ethernet device with the IP (vether0), and the devices for the local network (fxp0, athn0). This didn't work, and the vether device was stuck on a 10M type of media. I don't think that works when the media is different on the two other adapters. DHCP wasn't working on vether0 like it should, so something was wrong, probably the media thing.

So I decided another strategy of having two subnets, so I set things up as follows...

Code:

menger:root # cat /etc/hostname.fxp0
menger:root # cat /etc/hostname.athn0
inet 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.255
up media autoselect mode 11g mediaopt hostap nwid KintaroABODE chan 11 wpa wpakey Nintendo64 wpaprotos wpa2

I set up dhcpd.conf to provide addresses for these subnets, with the right default route and a static route between them.

Code:

I want to squeeze more power from my FreeBSD desktop. Trivia like shortening boot time or using lightweight WM already done.

I've recompiled everything from scratch, setting march='my CPU model'

I've got nice partition layout, as described in man tuning.

I've followed a few guides on the net, which gave me:

sysctl.conf:

Code:

kern.maxfiles=49312 # I know what it does
kern.sched.preempt_thresh=224 # But what bigger preemption treshold really means? It won't kick apps to the end of a queue so often? Cause it's how I understand it...
kern.ipc.shm_allow_removed=1 # Only info I've found is that it's disabled by default for security reasons, but otherwise it's safe to use...
kern.ipc.shmmax=67108864 # Know what it does.
kern.ipc.shmall=32768 # But not really sure about values... I have heard that it's enough to boost X. And yeah, it feels a bit more responsive...

Any resources/explanations are very welcome :)

rc.conf:

Code:

ifconfig_em0="DHCP"
sshd_enable="NO"
ntpd_enable="YES"
ntpdate_enable="YES"
ntpdate_hosts="in.pool.ntp.org"
powerd_enable="YES"
powerd_flags="-a hiadaptive"
hald_enable="YES"
dbus_enable="YES"
dumpdev="NO"
sendmail_enable="NONE"
sendmail_msp_queue_enable="NO"
sendmail_outbound_enable="NO"
sendmail_submit_enable="NO"
cupsd_enable="YES"
devfs_system_ruleset="system"
clear_tmp_enable="YES"
clean_tmp_X="YES"

I guess nothing interesting here, besides powerd settings maybe...

loader.conf:

Code:

kern.ipc.shmseg=1024
kern.ipc.shmmni=1024
kern.maxproc=10000
tmpfs_load="YES"
hint.acpi_throttle.0.disabled="1" # This one I don't really get...
kern.timecounter.hardware=HPET # This one I don't really get...
kern.hz=1000 # Back on linux I had to choose that @ compilation time :) Maybe there is a parameter to set it, but I don't know about any...
vfs.read_max=32 # Rise it?

Hmm... What else can I do? And why should/will it work?

P.S.
FreeBSD tweakability is absolutely awesome! :)

Hello,

I'm new to BSD and am trying to configure a NetBSD installation on a laptop. The installation runs smoothly (except the NIC isn't supported).

I can use the console and start X, but as soon as I touch the touchpad, the keyboard (and touchpad) no longer respond. A USB keyboard and mouse connected will still work.

dmesg reports:

Code:

pms0 at pckbc1 (aux slot)
pms0: Synaptics touchpad version 7.2
pms0:Palm detect
pckbc1: using irq 12 for aux slot
wsmouse0 at pms0 mux 0

I've tried adding a 'driver "synaptics"' line to xorg.conf, but then a USB mouse no longer works and the problem stands.

Do I have to compile a kernel with synaptics support, or is there something simple I haven't done to get this working correctly?

Many thanks for any help.
