Audio Chat for Solaris?

hi

i have Kde and Gnome on my desktops of Solaris Express.

i am using Kopete and/or Pigeon Messenger.

i do not think either of them have audio chat.

Does anyone know what i can use to chat to a windows User since there is no Skype yet or Solaris at this time?

My only guess would be a dedicated server/client system for audio chat like Mumble or TeamSpeak. Mumble is a Qt app and fairly portable (win/lin/osx binaries + source code) so it should work if you can find a server.


In addition, in an update to the Solaris 10 OS, the Solaris Linux Application Environment will allow users on x86 systems to take existing, unmodified Linux binaries and run them on the Solaris platform. This new level of interoperability will give users access to the applications they prefer while at the same time enabling them to reap the benefits of Solaris 10 functionality.


TeamSpeak offers Linux binaries for the client (which is what I use on FBSD) but no source code or Solaris Binaries :\

i tried it but did not get anything to work.

i have been pulling my hair out over certain issues on Solaris

Yes very nice OS indeed but The support is not good at all.
Also when i run programs like second life chat
the movies in world do not play at all.

i heard they can work if you compile second life, and i had tried to compile
and that is something i am not too good with,.because i get confused when
extracting certain folders like artwork, and where or what folder they go into.
and a few other things like patches that you have to put i place.
i need a kindergarden teacher to help me with that kind of stuff lol.

Also another issue was voice chat does not work in
Second life either which was annoying.

So i just use a packaged version of Second life with no movies
and no Audio chat whatsoever.

i know it all works on FreeBSD and you also have Skype on FreeBSD

Last night o was so fed up with Solaris that i installed FreeBSD
from scratch.another OS i truly love alot :)

That was really fun doing that all over again but i ran into some problem
only after doing an upgrade my sound server signal 11 crashed on KDE.
i looked all over google as google is my friend and i found nothing to cure it.
and so i gave up too easily as i did not see anyone on here late lastnigt
so i am back on Solaris this morning again.

i really can not wait for the Linux thing to all be possible on Solaris.
so i can at least install Skype on here and talk to some of my friends using voice so i do not always have to Use a different OS.

i read on a web page that the Snv version of second life is supose to work when playing movies
i tried that and still it did not work not even on Open Solaris did it work for me either.

So now i am back to my good ole Solaris Express version.

skype in terms of security is crap, if you really care you should use ekiga.

Open source have some very nice benefits ....

ekiga Yes.ok i installed it once, played with it a while and forgot my password.
It was not easy setting it up at first either.
Also i dont know anyone who has ekiga installed.

If any windows user can install it i will be able to talk to them as well right?
i dont know anyone who uses FreeBSD or Solaris except a friend of mine who
is hardly ever online.

It's in /usr/ports/multimedia/gstreamer

GStreamer has a plugin based design I think so most anything useful that it can do is probably in a gstreamer-plugin-something in the audio, graphics, or multimedia categories of /usr/ports.


If you can find what part of gstreamer it needs you can probably install the needed gstreamer-plugin-* ports.

There is beta support for windows afaik, found a tutorial for windows (http://commandline.org.uk/more/2008/may/22/ekiga-voip-client-windows/) so it might be a valid option.

my other option to the ekiga is to make more Linux Unx frinends lol
