How to play an avi video?

I have realized some small video using my photocamera.
I have installed mplayer.

Because I could not see anything and I tried to put the codec package all-20071007.tar.bz2 in /usr/local/lib/codecs but the problem persist.

I can play avi files without any problems with mplayer. Did you install win32-codes? I am not sure if that is the reason I can play but I do have that packet on my machine. Other than that I have done nothing.

codecs go to /usr/local/lib/win32/

Now i have tried the problem.

mplayer name_video.avi &
no video
mplayer name_video.avi
ok (without win32-codes)
