Hello,
There are many Live CD distros for Linux, and they are very handy. Are there any Live CD distros of *BSD?
Sure. FreeSBIE and RoFreeSBIE are two I know of. I have a few incarnations of the former, and it is very useful to have around.

Doesn't PC-BSD have a LiveCD?
The FreeBSD Fixit CD has always been a LiveCD, although it's CLI-only. And the newer CD1s are also LiveCDs.
DragonFlyBSD's install CD has always been a LiveCD (CLI-only). They have a SoC project to create a GUI LiveCD and LiveDVD.
There are probably others out there as well.

Information on OpenBSD Live CD's-
Jggimi's got a live cd for OpenBSD on his website. It's down at the moment, but Google cached a page from his site as of July 16, so it's probably a temporary thing.
Here's one that's up right now, and based on the latest version (4.3)-

My ISP's access for my server has been up and down regularly for the past week or two; the server is up but its internet connection has been wacky;
All of the many ISO archives are stored elsewhere, on an FTP server with a 100Mbit pipe into a major Internet conduit. So if you start a download, you should have no trouble.

PC-BSD did release a Live CD version of their 1.4 alpha or beta releases but I as far as I am personally aware, never commited to releasing Live CDs.
There are several OpenBSD based live CDs: OliveBSD (http://g.paderni.free.fr/olivebsd/), Anonym.OS (http://sourceforge.net/projects/anonym-os/) LiveCD, Quetzal (http://quetzal.matem.unam.mx/), and FuguIta (http://kaw.ath.cx/openbsd/?en/LiveCD) but I all are based on OpenBSDs later 3.x releases.
I believe MidnightBSD has a Live CD capability but don't quote me on the matter. Maybe someone else here has tried it?

Last year I played a little bit with RoFreesbie from http://rofreesbie.org/ and I was quite impressed.
For NetBSD see http://www.netbsd.org/gallery/products.html#netbsd-live. (NeWBIE)

Yes, you did. :) I guess that vocation you took was little bit too long. We were
updating documentation in the mean time;)

This is the summery of what you left out.
OpenBSD based live CDs active project
BSDanyware http://bsdanywhere.org/
MarBSD http://openbsd.maruweb.de/download_en.shtml
I am not listing dead one because there are too many of them:p
FreeBSD based live CDs which you omitted:
TrueBSD http://www.truebsd.org/ru/about
RelaxBSD http://www.relaxbsd.org/main/
I am not listing dead one again. People who are curious about all FreeBSD and OpenBSD distros can find the most comprehensive documentation on BSD Serbija server. To my knowledge there are in total 41 FreeBSD based distros 23 of which are dead. There are also 19 based OpenBSD out of which only six are active. Everything is of course documented in Serbian:)
I am not familiar at all with NetBSD as you know so I would not know much about NetBSD distros. The same goes
for DragonFly BSD.
If owners of this server are interested we could maintain the complete list of *BSD based distros something like
Distro Watch for Linux. In English of course.
I would also like to express my personal gratitude to soXXX who actually started whole project at BSD Serbija

Ok, well BolwFish is mostly intended for embedded market and CF cards so it's not really a liveCD; apart from seeing that it's based on FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE I don't understand a word on RelaxBSD's site as I don't speak Chinese... :D I completely forgot about TrueBSD though. Thanx for the other two. ;) I made additions in upper post.

My bet:) I was working too much today. I fixed my post too.
netboz is dead for a few years now isn't it?
archive.org doesn't work right now so I can't prove ist :D

Yes, that's why I put the note in brackets. There's a notice on their site too, I just listed it for historical reasons (whatever they might be :D).
There is also a newcomer called BlackBSD, which is based on NetBSD, but its beta version is due to arrive yet: http://blackbsd.co.nr/

anybody here have inside knowledge on building/installing to a usb drive...?
jggimi
09-18-2008, 01:23 AM
Certainly, hackware. I do it all the time in OpenBSD, where a USB-mounted drive behaves like a SCSI device -- it doesn't matter if it's a memory stick or a disk drive. Your BIOS must be able to boot from USB to be able to boot the drive. If not, one can boot from other media -- your network, a non-USB hard drive, CD, or even diskette.
