Your favourite mailer

What is your favorite mailer? why?
I'm was using Thunderbird, then Evolution (prefer because i can send mail with sendmail), and sylpheed2.... ah and i was using mail to, but since console doesn't support my native lang, i have to use other tools

Frankly none of them satisfies me....

So I would like to hear, what other ppl like using.....


EDIT: Perhaps you could also provide screenshoot of your mailer, so we all know what we're speaking of, without need of installing :)

The handy thing about mutt is that I can use it from any machine. One can set it up to even include .doc attachments if necessary.

Although it takes a bit of adjustment if you've been used to GUI mail clients, you will probably find it was worth the effort. I have a page on it at

As for the language issue, assuming that you can use your language in an Xterm of some sort, for example, uxterm, you should be fine. (As you have to have X running for a GUI mail client anyway, this shouldn't be a sacrifice.)

For example, I can use mutt with Asian character sets, though not in console.

KMail for just e-mail, or Kontact if I need a full PIM suite. The beauty og Kontact is that it is just a shell around a bunch of KDE apps (KMail, KAddressbook, KNotes, etc). So you can use the separate apps or Kontact, and access the same data stores.

Personally, I can't wait for KDE-PIM to be ported to (and stable on) Windows.

Well in my opinion they all suck!


I've found Squirrelmail and GMails web interfaces to be superb and mutt is one heck of a great mua !!!!!!!

KMail I found to be quite nice and very configurable, for me Thunderbird is just 'comfortable' because I used it for so long.


but none are perfect :-(

Why is it that I can never get to mutt.org? Every time there is a mailer thread people talk about mutt-devel and I say let me go to website and check it out. But the website always gives me....Could not connect to remote server.

mutt is certainly my preferred mail client, but for those in need of a GUI mail client I suppose I can recommend KMail or Thunderbird. As far as online mail is concerned it has to be gmail.

Having recently walked some 200 companies through a massive mail migration I can also list a few mail clients I don't really care for: Eudora, Entourage, Kermit, Outlook Express.

Maybe I'm too old-school, but I like my mail stored in directories.

I've used Evolution for a long time (and still do) but I would not recommend it. It has had more bugs than all the rest of the BSD applications I have used combined. (I don't count Wine in that tally.) There are constant regressions and interactions that are just weird. Then when fixes comes out, you have to recompile half of Gnome.

Other than that, it works well if you like GUIs. And it has never lost any mail.

I use TBird on many computers as well, but I have a lot of contacts in Evo, and I also use the calendar a lot.

Like most things, often more than one program is helpful (I think I use 4 browsers regularly). At least I got the Windows boxes in the main house switched to TBird (to cut down on maintenance).

Well, give it a go. It really is pretty nice. There is just a downside you should be aware of. Thunderbird, in contrast, has been remarkably stable (it is sorta frozen at the moment).

Well, I support many computers, and they run four different OSs. A couple are for my wife's business, another two are for my granddaughter. I've moved them over to TBird.

On browsers (not to get too far OT), I use Epiphany for most things. I'm just used to it, and it has all my bookmakrs, password and such. One internal site I use needs a few features that Firefox has, so I use that. I use FF/Wine for Flash. Linux-Opera I use sometimes; certain web sites (mainly a grant submission program) requires IE.

The same is true for text, BTW. I use five different programs for text processing, depending on the need. That's in addition to a couple of different text editors.

I guess I use a toolbox that has a lot of different hammers.

You know, I actually do the same thing too. I use konqueror for little quick things because it starts the fastest, and I seem to have it open alot for file browsing. Opera for the bulk of my browsing, Firefox for things I need "compatibility" with, and if all goes to hell, Wine MS Firefox for things like Flash etc. For email I use Thunderbird because it does what I need it to, with out being insanely overweight (see: outlook)

In My opinion Thunderbird is more user friendly. They work fine though.
