I need to buy a new mp3 player, but I see that most require Windows, and I don't want to buy an Ipod for the same reason.
Any idea on a unix-friendly mp3 player, that would let me upload my music just like in a flash card, without needing any extra software?
thank you

Most of them have extra software, but, as far as the computer is concerned, they are just Umass flash drives.
The software is just very ordinary ripping utilities, and even more ordinary media players. Usually best avoided, even if you are using a windows machine.
However, this is not universal, and there is generally no other way than plugging it in ans seeing what happens.

Is music phone an option?
I recently bought a Sony Ericsson W910 and I have to say the music quality is superb
And yes, very unix-friendly, all my FreeBSD knows is its an umass device

Here is a suggestion, avoid "U3" drives.. too much hassle.

it would be best if it was a pure music player.
If anyone has good experience with one, please share.

Not just a pure music player but when used as MP3 player fantastic.

When plugged into computer running *BSD it is seen by kernel as SCSI hard drive. You can transfer files,
MP3s or .wav voice files the same way you would move them from one to another
directory.
I got mine for free which was kind a nice.

Geeze I must be getting to be a stone age old fart.
My MP3 player like any I would buy is very UNIX friendly, burn files to CD-R in the proper format, pop it in, and kick back and relax ;-).
If anyone laughs at the facth that there is a phonograph in the house, wait till you have great grand kids who laugh at your family history :-P
