I have a thinkpad X60 (2gb ram/dual core) which should theoretically easily powerful enough to manage FreeBSD in one form or another but I haven't managed to get PC-BSD or FreeSBIE to boot. I get a "can't load kernel" error and a command prompt almost immediately after the install starts with no information that I can identify as helpful. I have previously burned a CD using my current set up to install BSD on another machine and it worked ok so I think my burning equipment is ok.

I did post on the PC BSD forums but nobody seemed to be sure what the problem was. I have looked around on google a fair bit but havent had any luck, if anyone has any idea what my problem might be I would be most greatful.

I am not sure whether it is an option for you, but in general Thinkpad laptops are quite well supported in OpenBSD. Most developers have Thinkpads ;)

What version of FreeBSD? Did you tried to play with various BIOS settings? .....
