hm, I never liked "Hack and Slash" RPGs like Diablo, Dungeon Siege, Nox etc., it's point at enemy, click, wait until enemy is dead, repeat three zillion times.

I'm much more into "story RPGs", like Fallout, Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate, etc.
I'm playing Arcanum right now ..

btw, I removed the [img] tags, as stated in the rules (http://daemonforums.org/showthread.php?t=10#images) the maximum size for images is ~640x480.

I'm more into tactical FPS' myself- Ghost Recon, etc.

But none of these games run on OBSD :( ... sigh.

Does UnrealTournament run on OpenBSD? There's this mod called Infiltration which is a very good (e.g. The best) Realistic Tactical FPS...

One of my friends enjoys the Diablo games, so he'll probably be glad to hear it lol

Diablo is (was) indeed a clickfest, but it's helluva fun clickfest.
And judging from the demo video, it will be brutal.

Haha, I played this game 6, 7 years ago. God, time flies so fast, I feel so old :D. I think it was Diaolo II btw.

And I tell you what, it was bloooody lagging. The whole local network was frozen when we attempted to kill the boss.

It was lot of fun! :D

But the game was not really addictive. The only game can kept me playing all day long was "Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven"

I miss the game so much :p

Less other crap, more WoW expansions! Any resource you're not putting into your cash-cow Blizzard is simply a lie!

And with Starcraft II and Diablo III on the way, Blizzard will continue to stick to a release schedule of "whenever the hell we feel like" and the fans will beg for more!

But seriously. I'm excited!

Hehe, yeah Arcanum is definitley among the better games i've played.
Never finished though ;(

While i agree that Diablo is alot of clicking around, there is an underlying story. If you have followed that story from the first diablo game at least i am very eager to find out how everything develops.

Nice game, I already lost one year back in 1997 and 2000 :D

I love RPGs. But I hate real-time RPGs. Give me the good ol' turn-based DnD games anyday. The graphics may have been crappy in Pools of Darkness, but what an addictive game that (and all the others) was.

The Forgotten Realms games from a few years back are also fun ... but again, why the real-time battles? Know how hard it is to control 6 characters fighting 30 enemies in real-time gets? It totally kills the flow of the game. And using "pause" really sucks.

Diablo _is_ a Rogue-like and furthermore the design is from the original Rogue-creator ;-) And I'm playing e.g. NetHack since 87/88 (Amiga) and I like it. But I do know the mentioned SSI-RPGs too, started with Pool of Radiance and I like them too. It's a different approach.

Which Pool of Darkness, the latest one or the one that came on 5 1/4" floppy?
If it's the 5 1/4" EGA version I agree!

I like the Elder Scroll series of games. Although as the graphics get better I think the story or games play lacks. Daggerfall story and game play with Oblivion graphics would be close to prefect RPG play on a PC for me.

Actually, I rather like the pause function as it's implemented in the infinity engine games, it's a good mix between real-time and turn-based combat.
There's also an option to auto-pause the game every round (6 seconds), which would be the same as playing turn-based.

i find the game interesting - at last more "flexabilty" - destroy everything on your path :) this game fall under "click-o-mania" games :) i destroy not one mouse on it :) once on hardcore i died and rip-off the buttons...

/off @ Business_woman is that Saddam on you avatar ?

>I rather like the pause function as it's implemented in the infinity engine games

But they have depth, like Baldurs Gate or Neverwinter Night. Diablo is more action than RPG and it's a lot of fun because of its fast pace.

The ones that originally came out on floppies. I got the Gold Collection on CD-ROM way back when, and played through them all again. I got the original Pools of Radiance on 3.5" floppy when we got our first 486sx2/66, and was hooked (but couldn't afford computer games back then).

I like the Elder Scroll series of games. Although as the graphics get better I think the story or games play lacks. Daggerfall story and game play with Oblivion graphics would be close to prefect RPG play on a PC for me.

I've heard good things about the Elder Scrolls, and played one on the original NES, but never purchased it when they came out (no time, no money, etc). And then when I had time/money, they weren't available anymore. :(

Aren't we talking about Diablo 3 and it's realtime fights?

Pause is okay. But it's nothing like a proper turn-based system. For instance, you can't (at least in the Icewind Dale games) select where players should move while paused. And the auto-pause just drove me nuts as it constantly stopped, then goes, then stops, then goes. And the graphics get really choppy (at least on my system at the time - dual-AthlonMP 1.6 GHz, 3 GB RAM, 128 MB nVidia 4400MX).

Give me a proper turn-based RPG anyday. Make it "real-time" while wandering around, while in the towns, while talking with NPCs. But once you encounter an enemy, then use the turn-based rules/setup/interface: You select what each character will do, where they will move, etc. Then the action starts. Once everyone has finished their actions, and/or the round ends (for actions that take multiple rounds), then you select what they are going to do. Repeat ad nauseum. I mean, the game is based on turn-based rules ... but doesn't implement them properly in the interface?

I really like the graphics, story-line, characters, effects, etc in the Icewind Dale games. But I just could not get over the battle setup, and eventually just gave up on the games. I have Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate as well, but haven't bothered to try them, due to the above.

It just irks me how so many games are going 3D for no other reason than to be 3D, are going real-time for no other reason than to be real-time, are going to online multi-player for no other reason than to have another checkbox ticked. Maybe I'm just getting too old for computer games. :( Or else I need to develop a really bad meth habit, so I can become a twitchy-games player. [shakes head] Where's the in-depth story? Where's the immersivenesss? Where's the "oh my god, where'd the time go?" feeling? Why is the interface in my way?

Yeah, but what's that got to do with Rogue? There's nothing real-time or Diablo-like in Rogue.

Well, like rogue diablo is a endless stream of random-generated dungeons ... It's similar in that way ... But totally different in every other...

However, it does seem that Diablo is insired by rogue(-likes), from http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_48/289-Secret-Sauce-The-Rise-of-Blizzard.3:
Having met Blizzard's Allen Adham at CES, Brevik took advantage of the opportunity to plug his own idea for a PC game: "I came up with the idea for Diablo ... when I was high-school," says Brevik. "It was modified over and over until it solidified when I was in college and got hooked on an ASCII game called Moria/Angband. When we pitched Diablo to Blizzard, we pitched a turn-based, single-player DOS game."

The Dark Eye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Schwarze_Auge#Computer_and_Videogames) was cool - all three games. the newest Drakensang is not turn based like the old ones before but I think I should gie it a try. I would stop playing WOW for it because I was a huge fan of the pen and paper "The Dark Eye" (actual the german origin "Das schwarze Auge").

I like Blizzard's commitment to multi-platform game. Their entire catalog is available for Mac, including upcoming games, and supposedly they test their games on WINE and Cedega.

I must thank you fer posting this. Because I would've not known about Diablo III if you didn't. Maybe the Starcraft II news made me think that there will be no new Diablo, as least not anytime soon. Anyway, thanks again! Weird to be getting information on one of my fav pc game in a BSD forum but heck, nothing is possible nowaday. :D

p/s: hope they add necromancer in it!
