Welcome all, I hope everything is to your liking!

Please read the README thread (http://daemonforums.org/showthread.php?t=10), it contains some important information about these forums.

Good luck with it! I'll play...

Couple of comments: the web site seems a bit slow, at least here on the US left coast. It could be something to watch. Also, might it be appropriate to have a separate Solaris section? Many of us are starting to dabble with it.

Carpetsmoker

I added a Solaris section, but removed it later because I figured not many people posted Solaris issues on bsdforums ... I will re-add it.

A little slow on the other coast too.

I like the logo though.

I like the logo though.
I suppose a logo with "Spawn of Satan" would have been too racy... \ducks

Carpetsmoker
04-30-2008, 07:52 PM
Hmm, it's ok in the Netherlands, and it's a U.S. server :/
In any case, I'll see how it goes and fix stuff when/if necessary (e.g. get new hosting).

I like the logo though.

Credits go to vermaden!

I am also finding it slow from NY.

That's nice that you have that thanks option--that's one thing about Ubuntu forums that I consider a nice touch.

Bit slow in .au but not unusable

I take that back, it took 2 minutes to make this post!

The DNS Server has successfully been switched and things are beginning to properly propagate, so hopefully all of these speed problems have been resolved for everyone. Let us know if it is still slow for you.

scottro
05-01-2008, 12:49 AM
Once I'm on the forums, it's fine. Getting there is still a little slow, but I suspect it's still propagating.

Carpetsmoker
05-01-2008, 01:05 AM
Ok, well, You can use the IP for now (http://76.162.25.203), It works very fast for me...

I will see if the DNS is still slow in the morning and fix it if necessary...

I can't upload my avatar. :-(. It shows in my profile, but not by my posts. (Watch it show up now.)

Carpetsmoker
05-01-2008, 03:55 AM
You uploaded a profile picture, not an avatar, a profile picture is intended to be a photo of you or something and only supposed to show on your profile :)
Look at my profile for an example...

To upload an avatar, go to your User CP and click "Edit Avatar" in the left menu, NOT "Edit Profile Picture".

Im not quite sure why is "don't panic" inserted in the logo? Something to do with kernel panic? :D

Way to go!

O.o

The joke is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don't_Panic_(Hitchhiker's_Guide_to_the_Galaxy)
In the novel, it is said that despite its many glaring (and occasionally fatal) inaccuracies, the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy itself has outsold the Encyclopedia Galactica because it's slightly cheaper, and because it has the words "Don't Panic" on the cover.

What? You don't get out to the movies either? ;) (It was made into a movie a few years back, and was just shown on Space a few months ago.)

Excellent message, though, for computer users everywhere. Don't you think?

Carpetsmoker, it might be good to begin some sticky FAQ messages within each major division -- Free, Open, & Net. If the message is "owned" by you (or at least started by an Admin...), then it may appear more official.

Is there a way that such a message can be locked, but editable by selected people? I'm free associating here. Anyone else with ideas on how to make such living documents useful is encouraged to speak up... :)

Good, I was ashamed to look at your posts because you looked naked without it.

I added two themes these two looked the best, you can find more here:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=230
Keep in mind that vB 3.7 is only a few days old, so there aren't as many themes for it yet...

I will also be creating a new DaemonForums theme, but this will take several weeks, and there is also more important stuff to take care of first ...

Yes, I was planning on this ... I can create empty FAQ threads for now, but I don't have time to write the entries...

You mean more than just the mods and admins but not everybody?
I'm not sure, I will look at it..

Nor do I think you should. As each project has its own flavor, the FAQ for each collection of subforae should be distinctive. In particular, I would like to transfer jggimi's rules of engagement, & I have a number of PF links. I wouldn't expect you to know these...

Along moderator boundaries would probably be the easiest. I'll ping jggimi to see if he wants moderator status & have him get back to you if he does.

Ok, I am creating FAQ threads in every forum, and then "soft deleted" them, if a mod has something to put there they can undelete them ("manage->undelete").

I apologize for my part in straying from the original subject, but the topics covered in this thread are all over the place. Perhaps we need to exercise some discipline by staying on-topic. Other subjects deserve their own threads.

Thanks! As a low priority task, you might want to omit your tag-line in these FAQ's. It may confuse those where English is already a challenge.

Been on BSDforums for a few years on a daily basis, though i had never done more than 3 post. Mainly using it as a guide on how certain problems can be solved. Spam is defintely a problem there in BSDForums and a wise choice to setup this alternative. Nice seeing all the regulars here as well. Pretty sure it will be the best BSD forum soon. Its the people and the contents that make a good forum.

The site is a bit sluggish from the UK too.

I didn't participate much at bsdforums.org, I mainly used the forums as a reference to help supplement the FreeBSD handbook. While a fresh start is always nice it is shame that all the information built up over the last 6 years might be lost.

I mailed Carpetsmoker about that ugly default theme (phpBB3 looked better), but he said that other things are more important now.

As for ready to use themes, this one is PERFECT*

*I will just do sed/IE_SHIT/GREAT_DAEMON/g with it and it will be great.

I am also ready to d oany other graphics as needed (buttons/banners/...)

I’d like to suggest that a dedicated sub forum under the gnu Linux for Ubuntu

I'll think about it when the GNU/Linux forums get flooded with Ubuntu stuff...

I suggest you no matter how good your transcript is, it is not a good idea to post it in public.

Also, the subforum for linux is more than enough, this is forum dedicated for BSD and there is no good reason for creating a new subforum just for ubuntu

I made the transition as well... probably the last from the 'old bunch'...

The site looks great... and revives my interest completely.

Great work, folks for this forum!

I was gone for a while and when I recently came back online I saw what is going on with BSDForums..

It's a pity that we lost such a place like BSDForums, but I'm happy with this new home of the BSD systems!

Cheers to all and once again - great job! :)

After 3 weeks and our forum hasnt showed up within the first 50 results from google with key words "unix forum", "bsd forum" or "freebsd forum".

Google can yeild different results based on user's location but I guess it doesnt make any significant difference here.

Anyway, keep up the good work guys :)

I posted for a while at bsdforums, but had been gone for almost two years due to other things in life taking priority. Now, I'm back, and looking forward to discussing NetBSD, Perl, and other things.

Thanks for getting this site set up. It's a shame what happened, but I'm excited to be here.
