Hi all, i'm neubie here, so please forgive me for my stupid question. I would like to ask :
1. when i install freebsd 7.0 on my laptop acer 5583 nwxmi when i type halt -p it's only shutdown the system, not like in my pc it shutdown completely is this normal ?
2. i use wi fi alot on my laptop, my wifi is intel pro 3945 and freebsd 7.0 seems not detected it at all. Where can i get the driver ?
3. i use marvell yukon ethernet 88e8030 in my laptop and i have download the driver from marvell.com the package is "installbsd70x86v10.51.2.3.tar.gz" how i install it ?
is copying if_myk.ko to /boot/kernel make it works ?
4. i need pspp 0.6.0 for my last work before i graduate but i see only pspp 04.0_1 on freebsd port can you help me
thanks, it feel better now :o

halt -p should powerdown your computer, unfortunately this doesn't work for all mainboards because of ACPI differences/perks.
2. i use wi fi alot on my laptop, my wifi is intel pro 3945 and freebsd 7.0 seems not detected it at all. Where can i get the driver ?
Yes, the wpi driver, which is included in FreeBSD.
3. i use marvell yukon ethernet 88e8030 in my laptop and i have download the driver from marvell.com the package is "installbsd70x86v10.51.2.3.tar.gz" how i install it ?
Doesn't the msk driver (Again, included with FreeBSD) work?
In any case, you can extract this archive with:
tar xf installbsd70x86v10.51.2.3.tar.gz
4. i need pspp 0.6.0 for my last work before i graduate but i see only pspp 04.0_1 on freebsd port can you help me
math/pspp is at version 0.6.0, you probably have an out-of-date portstree.
See chapter 4.5.1 of the FreeBSD handbook (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports-using.html#PORTS-TREE) for instructions on how to update your ports tree.

thanks, for the answer.:D
oh yeah, about the acpi problem, can it to be fixed ?
the wpi is not detected it at all, and the msk is not detect it too...
what should i do?
oh yeah, the texas card reader how can i make it work?
do you have any experience with fvwm? Where can i read the documentation beside in the official sites because it,s confusing for ex windozer like me.
:confused::confused:
thanks again

post output of pciconf -lv
post output of dmesg

All usefull documentation is provided in fvwm manul page,
if you are interested in something special there is offical fvwm forum. (but feel free to PM me - I'm fvwm fan)

I personally find the http://fvwm.org/doc/unstable/index.html]html documentation and the manual pages (http://fvwm.org/documentation/manpages/) for the flibin' virtual window manger the best resource -- gorking at it untill it makes sense or your head explodes (which probably requires both to do really awesome things).
Creating the basic configuration file through the menu will yield a fairly basic but "as expected" enough configuration but a personalized setup is better fvwm is very much a build it your way frame work imho.
ps:
fvwm-devel / 2.5 is stable enough for typical usage

You'll need Freebsd 7.0 to use those devices.

well, hi all i'm i confuion now i read several articles about freebsd and i want to ask :
1. is emulating other os make that os superior against the other (example: window can emulate freebsd and freebsd can't)?
2. what should i do first postinstallation compile the kernel or install desktop environment and prepackaged software?
3. is there any simple to understand how tos like mounting flashdisk automatically from any user, , monting cd withouth terminal, setting xdm or kdm, etc... ?
thanks

1. is emulating other os make that os superior against the other (example: window can emulate freebsd and freebsd can't)?
My babelfish seems to be unable to translate this to English.
2. what should i do first postinstallation compile the kernel or install desktop environment and prepackaged software?
The order doesn't matter, but you probably don't want to compile a kernel in the first place, it had no performance/stability benefits, and only takes up time...
3. is there any simple to understand how tos like mounting flashdisk automatically from any user, , monting cd withouth terminal, setting xdm or kdm, etc... ?

The only reason to compile a custom kernel these days are:
0/ you want or need something that needs adjustments to the kernel configuration build -> the handbook explains how to build a custom kernel.
1/ you want/need to build a custom kernel with support for one of your devices that lacks support for building/using the driver as a Loadable Kernel Module (LKM).
2/ Your computer has so little resources that you need a bare bones kernel -> unlikely unless your installing to a Toaster Oven or some other embedded job.
3/ You want to recompile the kernel for your arch. E.g. FreeBSDs x86 kernel uses 'cpu I486_CPU' as the lowest common demoninator, most consumer PCs are i686 based or better.

so, the conclusion is :
1. emulating other os don't make that os more superior than other os
2. i need a stable environment to make a custom kernel
3. i don't need to make custom kernel if i don't need it, right? but i need it to activate wpi kernel like Martin Turmoij says and msk too, right? so do i need to delete unescessary device recognition example: i dont have realtek netcard do i have to delete it? how could we now the one needto delete and the one that not need to?

'emulating other os'
can mean many things when people are not sure of what you mean.
For me, it means simulating the look, feel, behavior, and design of another operating system -> for example GNU/Linux are made to resemble UNIX.
For you it could mean running an operating system within an emulator, which has jack-shit to do with operating system superiority -> it is to do with emulator superiority ^_^
For some it might mean things like the support for FreeBSD, Linux and Windows ABIs.
If you need to build a custom kernel to get the wpi driver working, you'll need to -> someone here might know if there is a lkm option or not.
FreeBSD 7s GENERIC kernel configuration has the msk driver compiled in.
It is no problem to remove devices from the kernel config that you don't need when building a custom kernel, just remember you may have to recompile the kernel if you ever get one of thoe devices.

hi guys,
i've just messin around with my college computer, i've just installing freebsd 7 into one of it, dual boot with windoz. when i type startx x wasn't show, just message that i failed to make configuration file.
how can i solve this?
thanks
TerryP
07-16-2008, 07:44 AM
start here (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/handbook/x-config.html)
garfield270584
07-16-2008, 08:08 PM
yes, i've tried to type x -config or x --config to make a configuration file and there is a message like this :
there is no such file or directory. i'm sure i've installed x with the distribution.

1. msk is compiled in but i cannot configure network via kde. what i missing ?
You mean the msk driver?
Does the interface show up when you enter the command:
ifconfig
If so, then try using dhcp:
dhclient msk0
Of for a static address:
ifconfig msk0 192.168.100.10 netmask 255.255.255.0
3. about the x that error in my school i plugout network cable before reboot and i type startx and it works.... what happend?
Try using xinit instead of startx.

2. oh yeah, i'm going to repair my school computer tomorrow cause it cannot open freebsd slice at all maybe something is wrong when i install freebsd into it.
3. i read a zfs thread from this forum too and i've tried it, it works :
1. is there any risk if i do that step? what is the risk ?
2. what the benefit of zfs truly ?

For hardening FreeBSD check out security session, there's, topic about that

You might want to be more specific about what you mean by 'local port'.
To me at least, this means a port in the ports tree that is made by you but not committed to the wider ports infrastructure. --> In which case you should read the FreeBSD porters handbook as a starting point.
From what you are saying, I would gather that you just want to keep your software up to date without huge downloads over dial up.
You can't keep the system up to date without downloading newer versions of things, be it the source code to compile it (and depending apps/libs) or pre-compiled packages of everything. For building ports, you should be able to use 'make fetch-recursive' to fetch all the dist files needed for a port build -> check ports manual page.
You should also check the documentation for utilities such as portupgrade, porteasy, portmaster, e.t.c. from ports. And see if any of them meet your criteria. If you are more specific someone here might actually be able to help.

well i mean local port is making a cd like a port that i can install to another computer.
here is my plan : i download port plus the distfiles and the dependencies too at my college then i want to bring that port in a cd or dvd to my house and then copy or install the software that i need through the cd/dvd
can i do it? how?
TerryP

the easiest way would probably be either:
to update the ports tree (via portsnap/csup) then fetch all the distfiles needed by your ports. Then burn the contents of /usr/ports to CD -- you may need to compress it in order for it to fit on disk, depending on what you need. So all you would have to do is mount the disk on the system you want to upgrade, extract the files and start compiling.
or to recursively make (or fetch) packages of the desired ports on the system. Then burn those packages to DVD. Mount that DVD on the system you want to upgrade and use pkg_add to install them.
unless mounting network shares is an option.

the easiest way would probably be either:
to update the ports tree (via portsnap/csup)
portsnap will work way faster ;)
To use the wpi driver include this in your /boot/loader.conf
if_wpi_load="YES"
if_wlan_load="YES"
legal.intel_wpi.license_ack=1
Then in /etc/rc.conf
ifconfig_wpi0="WPA DHCP"
This is obviously if you are using WPA (which you must)
Read man wpa_supplicant.conf in order to set WPA up and create an /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf file
Enjoy your wireless network!!

1. why when i told my laptop to shutdown -p now it's not poer off it's still on?
2. i do postinstallation config and my marvell yukom 88e8038 and intel pro set wireless abg is not detected by sysinstall ? should i use wpi from clearchain?
should i use myk from marvell.com ?
3. what is the easiest way to upgrade port ? why?
thanks alot for your patience asking my question :)

hi guys, ! :D
1. after a few tries, finally ask Pyun Hyong, the deveoper of msk. i send my dmesg and he said that i need to disable my acpi. msk driver is work now thanks. :)
2. i've tried portsnap too but i have not trying to make "local port" yet, because when i tried to build openoffice.org-3 i get error message :
failed in /usr/ports/devel/lib-glio error code : 1
what is that mean ? how to solve this? this things happens when itried to install fvwm-crystal too.
3. is it ok not to activate acpi feature ? is this matter has a relation with acer bios that unsupported in freebsd yet?
4. oh yes how can i make my battery status on kde showed up ? so i can see it anytime?

do you have root permissions?
Use su or sudo to get root permissions
3.) you need to disable acpi, not enable.... it should be OK

hey, guys, i just want to ask about freebsd 6.4 and freebsd 7:
1. after freebsd release freebsd 7 they release freebsd 6.4 ? what is this mean?
2. what is the different between freebsd 6.4 and 7.0 (practicall side) ?
jb_daefo
12-24-2008, 07:35 PM
1... already using 6.3? use 6.4 unless you want to go to version 7
... new to FreeBSD? use a v7 RELEASE or _7 (STABLE) probably
2.... 6.4 will be unsupported sooner than 7.0 AFAIK. Other differences...

Heh, there are still people with FreeBSD 4.x boxes running around :-)
In my humble opinion, if you don't know which to choose and the machine is for personal use, you should probably run the latest Release (e.g. 7.0-Release) and use freebsd-update to install updates as they come along; including going to new releases (e.g. 7.1-Release) later on, when they become avail. (I personally wait a few weeks~months)
the best way I know to describe it -> Release is what makes it to the ISOs, Stable is a copy of Release, but it gets some new changes that *usually* don't break stuff, but didn't make it into release; both receive security updates and errata. Current is the bleeding edge of development, the latest code as of when you pulled it from the mirror, be it the best or the worst commit ever published. There is also a legacy production (6.4) and a production release (7.0), the most interesting changes will find their way into a production release, and a legacy release will change less often.
Personally, my server runs OpenBSD releases, my laptop runs FreeBSD stable.

well i think i get it now, by the way; open bsd is not free isn't it ?
and people say open bsd is harder to use than freebsd is it true?
and i heard about advance cryptographic ? is it better than sshd from freebsd ?
Oliver_H

>open bsd is not free isn't it ?
It's more free than any of those GPL systems.
>and people say open bsd is harder to use than freebsd is it true?
Well to some degree, but if you can cope with FreeBSD, Slackware, NetBSD or Arch you shouldn't have any problems with OpenBSD at all.
